Online social networks 4 Oct2009

More recently, with the wide spread use of social network service (Facebook, Twitter), people can have a virtual society on the internet, they can talk to their friend, post blogs, share ideas with their friends.
I personally use RenRen(http://www.renren.com) similar to Facebook about 1 year, In the beginning I was surprised with the power of social network system (SNS), it is very fresh to me. It helped me find many of my friends have not contact for years, and many of my classmates, new friends. I did lots of chatting with friends, comments on their walls, I post blogs photos, share my opinions, and get feedback. There are also some interesting web-based network games on it. After a while, I find myself addicted into the SNS, I spend about 4 to 5 hours per day on it. Sometimes get lost when not using it. Then I try to control myself on the use of SNS, gradually, I can have a proper use of SNS, I simply treat it as a tool, then I find myself more enjoyable on using it.
Twitter is a micro-blogging allows user to send and read shot message only 14 characterizes, always is the latest and ranked by time. Everybody can share their instant own idea.
Followings are some characteristics that I found after some experiences on using Twitter:
1. People are allowed to discuss and comments on certain events.
2. The twitter update is so fast that the latest update always is last one half minutes ago.
3. Many researcher use Twitter as a tool on analyzing people’s general behavior. Twitter was used in statistics research for the purpose of studying users’ searching behavior, can be used to analyze people’s favorites, based on click statistics, to know what news people are most interested in, to predict some trends.
With the proper use of SNS helps us to build a personal social network, get information from friends, and know more about them. In contrast if we are too much rely on SNS or addicted in it, sometimes we can lost ourself and forget about real online social network. In conclusion, SNS is a great tool for helping us to build our personal world, but not everything.
