Couples seem to like posting the same picture of themselves, perhaps kissing. I would worry about posting such pictures on the Internet. What does this say about people's view of private versus public? What happens if the relationship goes south?
I've noticed that women tend to post childhood pictures of themselves more often, but I have seen some men do it for a laugh. People go through old baby/childhood photo albums, scan in pictures, and then post them. Because of this elaborate process, it is a very deliberate act. Boredom? Irony? Humor?
This is somewhat related to the final category wherein once someone has a baby, this child overtakes her(usually) Facebook pictures. Profile pictures continually change from shot after shot of the baby. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about plastering the internet with pictures of one's child, since this small person has no say in the matter.
Overall, I think that profile pictures are less related to gender and are instead more a function of age and the overall personality of each individual person. Teenagers are the most likely to post matching boyfriend/girlfriend pictures, and the baby crazy profiles are typically reserved for people who are in their late twenties and thirties.
