Buying Friends

I came across an article in the New York Times about buying Facebook friends being offered by the company FakeYourSpace.com. For $0.99 a month, Brant Walker, and his two employees will sit in his home and be your new "friends." They create the profiles of attractive people, and post to your wall, so that it is very realistic. According to law, faking one's profile and friends is legal.
I found his other "business" slightly more disturbing. BreakYourSpace.com’s team will remove friends from an individual's list "by third party messenger." Users pay for an evaluation and then the removal of those deemed inappropriate friends.
If this is how people think they should be making impressions, then I truly feel sorry for them. What does it say about us if we’re willing to give up our agency, and even friends for the sake of online image?
